Calgren Renewable Fuels in Pixley, Tulare County’s only ethanol plant, has invested in key co-products to sell over the years as it cranks out 58 million gallons of fuel ethanol each year. The plant was the state’s first when it was built in 2009.(Visalia Times-Delta)

Air Liquide Industrial U.S. LP has commissioned a new state-of-the-art carbon dioxide liquefaction plant in Tulare County, California. The new 450 ton-per-day facility is one of three carbon dioxide liquefaction facilities owned and operated by Air Liquide in the state. (Ethanol Producer Magazine)

The San Joaquin Valley has become America’s breadbasket over the past few decades. Products including pistachios, almonds, citrus, stone fruit, cotton, and grapes are grown here and distributed all over the United States and are exported around the world. Tulare County, about a three-hour drive north of Los Angeles, recently surpassed nearby Fresno County to become the wealthiest agricultural county in the U.S. Home to 450,000 people, Tulare is also the top dairy producing country in the U.S. That means a lot of cows, which means a lot of manure, and in turn, all that agricultural activity has contributed to a region that has one of the worst air pollution records in the country. Furthermore, effluent from cow waste is a huge threat to what already are the San Joaquin Valley’s stressed watersheds. (Clean Technica)

It may have sounded impossibly idealistic at one time, but there's no longer any debate about whether dairy waste can be converted into low-carbon energy, even on an industrial scale. The question these days is, under what conditions does it make financial sense? A new operation just north of the Kern County border provides a fresh example of what it may take, in terms of logistics, volume requirements and government subsidies, to expand energy production from cow manure. Sustainable energy production has entered a new era in California as a consortium of American companies recently joined together with state energy officials to launch the Calgren Ethanol Biodigester, which utilizes waste from dairy farms to power the production of tens of millions of gallons of ethanol, all consumed in the Central Valley. When Jerry Schroeder arrived in Pratt, KS to restart and run the 57-million-gallon-a-year (MMGY) Pratt Energy, LLC ethanol plant, he found an operation that was very similar to the ethanol plant he'd been managing for five years at Calgren Renewable Energy in Pixley, CA. Four years after proposing to use dairy waste to help in its ethanol production, Calgren Renewable Fuels of Pixley is full steam ahead on a biomethane digester that will replace thousands of gallons of natural gas needed for heat and steam. Since its groundbreaking in August 2009, the company’s 55 million-gallon-a-year ethanol plant in Pixley has relied on piped-in natural gas to run a turbine generator capable of producing 5,800 kilowatts of electricity necessary to make process heat and steam. After being shut down and idle for more than five years, the ethanol plant in Pratt, Kan. is back in business under the ownership of Pratt Energy, a partnership between The Scoular Company and Pratt Biofuel Investors (PBI). Pratt Energy is operating the plant and marketing the ethanol, while Scoular is procuring the plant’s feedstock and marketing wet and dry distillers grains. (Scoular)

Chromatin, Inc., a leading provider of innovative crop breeding technology, sorghum seed products and feedstocks, and Calgren Renewable Fuels, a leading ethanol producer located in Pixley, CA, announced today an alliance to develop a local supply chain for sorghum for the production of fuel ethanol and distiller’s grains. The Valley’s only ethanol production plant is encouraging local farmers to plant grain sorghum next spring, promising to buy the grain to make ethanol instead of using Midwestern corn. “We would love to buy all the sorghum they can produce,” said Lyle Schlyer, president of Calgren Renewable Fuels near Pixley in Tulare County. Cows help you fill your cereal bowl, bake your cake and adorn your pizza. Now right here in Tulare County — cows will help you fill your gas tank. Calgren Renewable Fuels, the Pixley-based ethanol plant, has been awarded a $4.68 million matching grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC) to utilize dairy cow gas to make ethanol. The money will go to construction of a digester used to break down manure to make clean burning biomethane — the green equivalent of natural gas. (Sierra2thesea News Service)

Calgren Renewable Fuels, LLC hosted a grand opening and open house in December at the Calgren Pixley Ethanol Production Facility – California's only currently operational ethanol plant. Operating since August 2009, the plant is projected to generate 55 million gallons of fuel grade ethanol, 400,000 tons of animal feed, and 1.5 million gallons of corn oil each year. The plant is powered by an ultra-low NOx gas turbine generator capable of producing 5,800 KW of electricity and process steam. The Pixley plant maintains a carbon footprint much lower than typical plants, and production of ethanol per bushel of corn is high, requiring lower corn usage and less energy to process the corn. All of the products from the plant – ethanol, corn oil, and cattle feed – are distributed locally in the San Joaquin Valley. All in all, the plant is run very efficiently, says President Lyle Schlyer.

The Calgren Ethanol Plant completed construction and began continuously producing ethanol on August 8, 2009. We are hosting a grand opening and open house event on Tuesday, December 8, 2009. We are celebrating a vision that has now become a reality and want to share it with the community. We are offering personalized tours of the plant and guest speakers along with food and drinks.

The 55 million gallon ethanol plant will be located directly adjacent North of the J.D. Heiskell Feed Mill at the bottom of the photo. The Union Pacific RR and Hwy 99 are directly adjacent along the East side of the property line. Corn feed stock for the ethanol plant will be delivered to the Heiskell facility from the Midwest by 100 car shuttle trains, then transferred via elevators and conveyers to the ethanol plant for processing. Construction of the facility is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2008.
